
Applied Sociology :
ASA University Bangladesh is the proud pioneer of the Department of Applied Sociology-a uniquely first of its kind program in Bangladesh. The program envisions capacity building and life-skill development of the graduates
to meet upcoming job market demands in fast moving social contexts. The Applied Sociology program is mandated is to translate knowledge-production into efficient and effective social engineering toward sustainable solutions to emerging social problems..
In other words, applied sociology transforms theories into practices. It is the "practical arena" of sociological scholarship. Applied sociology incorporates emerging sociological discourses with process research. In doing so, this scholastic trend continuously walks through diverse social realities. This is, in fact, an outline to sophisticated social analysis and informed activism for meeting complex societal needs over time

Scholarship :
On the basis of HSC result, students receive 15-100% scholarship/tuition fee waiver in the first semester, and keep receiving extended benefit on the basis of semester result and performance in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. Wardens of ASA employees and freedom fighters, and students with physical disability and ethnic identity enjoy special tuition waiver.
Computer Labs and the Library :
ASAUB has a sophisticated central computer lab and a well decorated MIS lab with 24 hour internet facilities. Faculty members, researchers, students and staffs of ASAUB are entitled to freely access a large volume of central library resources, and more than 100 full-text journals. The Center for Socio-Economic Research of ASAUB publishes its biannual journal "ASA University Review" on a regular basis.
Admission Eligibility :
Minimum GPA 2.5 in SSC and HSC or equivalent examinations (at least two 2nd divisions). 'A' level students must have minimum GPA 2.5 in at least 5 'O' level subjects and 2 'A' level subjects. Only one E is acceptable in both levels.

Dr. Helal Mohiuddin, Professor & Chairman of the Department, has specialization in Development Sociology (MSS,Dhaka University Bangladesh), Regional and Rural Development Planing (MSc, Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand) and Anthropology of Globalization and Livelihood Strategy(University of Manitoba, Canada.)
Dr. ASM Amanullah

Dr. A.S.M. Amanullah is presently a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka.He did his Masters in Sociology from the University of Dhaka in 1989, and obtained Ph.D. in HIV/AIDS from the University of New South Wales (Sydney), Australia in 2002. During his relatively long job experience, he has worked not only as an academic researcher but also was involved in various research projects funded by different organizations. So far, Dr. Amanullah worked in 30 research projects as Principal Investigator (PI)/Co-PI/Consultant, about a half of which were directly related to Primary Health, HIV/AIDS or Reproductive Health issues. With his long and diverse experience in teaching, research and consultancy in the field of HIV/AIDS, FP, Nutrition, Media, Rural Development, and Reproductive Health Education, Dr. Amanullah continues to provide insight, and add new dimension to the subject against human rights, international legal framework and gender perspectives. His outstanding epistemological base in the discipline is unrivalled and his continued striving for attaining yet excellence is commendable. |
Dr. Helal Mohiuddin

Dr. Helal Mohiuddin obtained PhD (2004) in anthropology from the University of Manitoba in Canada; MSc (1997) in regional planning from the Asian Institute of Technology in Thailand; and BSS and MSS (1989) in Sociology from the University of Dhaka in Bangladesh. Throughout his research and teaching career since 1993, Dr. Mohiuddin taught at the University of Chittagong and University of Dhaka in Bangladesh; and University of Manitoba, and University of Winnipeg and Menno Simons College of the Canadian Mennonite University in Canada. Dr. Mohiuddin's interest and specialization lie in globalization-led changes in social dynamics, livelihood strategies, indigenous knowledge system, gender and development, disaster preparedness, and participatory development and qualitative research. Dr. Mohiuddin has edited and authored five books, and published twenty articles in reputed national-international journals. As well, he has contributed in twenty five social research projects as principal investigator (PI), co-investigator and team member. In addition, Dr. Mohiuddin contributed in eighteen training and workshop sessions as a resource person, and attended ten international conferences. |
Dr Ahasun Habib |
BSS ( Hons ) and MSS in Sociology, Jagannath University College, Dhaka 1994 $ 1995. He awarded PhD in Medical Sociology from California, USA in 2009. He has 13 years experience of teaching and research. Dr. Ahasun has written above 20 reference books concerning Sociology, Research Methodology, Social Problems in Bangladesh and Social Development issue. He is a chief editor of two International Research Journals, especially 'World Vision' ( ISSN: 2078-8460 ) and 'Banglavision' ( ISSN: 2079-567X ) |

Scholarship:
Students are given scholarship/tuition fee waiver from 15-100% for meritorious results in HSC only for first semester, but, waiver is given based on semester result. Students perform best in co-curricular activities like songs; dance, drama, debate, etc. are also given scholarships. Special waiver is given to disabled and tribal students. Special waiver is given to children of ASA members and the freedom fighters.
Research Programs
Current research program of the Department of Applied Sociology is 'Consumers' perception on causes of Market Price Hike, impacts on livelihoods and dealing with the issue.
The department has a plan to organize three national seminars during 2011 on (1) Role of [private] education sector organizations in Nation Building processes, (2) Consumers' perception on causes of Market Price Hike, impacts on livelihoods and dealing with the issue and (3) Challenges of Rural Colleges in ensuring quality higher education.
The department is also a member of consortium in a Collaborative Research with Southampton University, UK in association with Institute of Water and Flood Management (IWFM) of BUET. This five years research project on 'Ecosystem Services for Poverty Alleviation' will start from September 2011. The students of Applied Sociology including other departments have good scope and opportunities to participate actively in these programs.

We have chosen ASA University because it provides students with a clean, specious and fully air-conditioned campus with modern facilities. It has a rich library and computer lab. Teachers are highly qualified, devoted and efficient in teaching. I think we can apply the knowledge of Applied Sociology in our practical life.
