M. A. (Preliminary) in English

Program Objectives

The Department of English of ASA University Bangladesh offers the program, M. A.(Preliminary) in English, not only to familiarize the students with the intellectual exercises that the western creative writers have made over the centuries but also to produce learners as well-groomed professionals both for teaching as well as for jobs at national and international levels. The main aim behind this program is to bring out graduates to do a wide variety of jobs, public and private, and also to produce competent English teachers for secondary, higher secondary and tertiary levels. This program will also benefit those who wish to improve their language proficiency for professional use as writers, service-holders, educationalists, businessman, diplomats, translators, journalists, etc.

Features of the Courses

The courses for M. A. (Preliminary) are designed first to improve the English language proficiency of the students, to create an awareness of the basic aspects of linguistics and to introduce them with the basic terms, concepts and genres of literature, and then to let them read few great texts of English and American poems, dramas and novels.

The students will thus be prepared to read either M. A. in English, i.e. English Literature or M.A. in Applied Linguistics and ELT at par in their M. A. program with those having B. A. (Hons.) in English. One distinguishing feature of our way of imparting the courses is that it is mandatory for the students to write at least one Term Paper in each course and to appear at Viva-Voce at the end of each Semester Final examination on all the courses taught in that Semester.

Admission Requirement

Any Master Degree holder from subjects other than English and any graduate ( BA, B.Com, B.Sc. BSS or equivalent) having no 3rd class at any level will be eligible for admission into M. A. (Preliminary) in English.

ASAUB admits students with the potential to pursuing higher education. It welcomes applications from the students regardless of their gender, religion, age, race, national origin, social background, marital or parental status and disability. It is also committed to the principals of widening participation and encouraging applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. It may be noted that admission in some of our programs is very competitive and fulfilling the minimum requirement does not guarantee admission. ASAUB generally follow a policy of limiting the number of seats in a program which means that some students having eligibility often may not get admission.

Graduation

M. A. (Preliminary) is a one-year program divided into three Semesters. To pass the students will have to complete all 27 Credit Hours with a minimum CGPA of 2.00.
